LukeThomasfounderofLacunaKitesdescribeshisjourneyandchallengesofcreatingthebrandweknowand love today.Definitely, a must-read for kitesurfing enthusiasts.Istartedwindsurfingin1985asa12-year-oldboy.Livingin Johannesburg,600kmfromthenearestocean,myparents wouldtakethefamilytothelocaldamandwewouldplay aroundonWindsurferOneDesigns.Theseboardswerehuge, massivepop-outplasticmoldedmonoliths.Itwasan exasperatingeffortsimplygettingthemfromthecar’srooftop rackstothewater’sedge.Theyhadremovablewooden daggerboards,triangularsails,andwoodenbooms– resemblingnothingofthesportofwindsurfingweknow today.Lookingbacktheequipmentwasarchaic,stone-age stuff.Yetmyfamilyandfriendslovedit,anditwassomeof the best memories of my life.IfelldeeplyinlovewithwindsurfingandovertheyearsIgotbetter,3yearslaterIenjoyedmyfirstwindsurf intheIndianOcean,myfirstsessionatVetchesBeachinDurban.Itwasexcitingwatchingwindsurfing equipmentdevelopsorapidlyinayoungsport,watchinglegendssuchasRobbyNaishandLairdHamilton intheirprime.Asateenager,all4wallsofmyroomwereplasteredwithpicturesfrom‘Boardsailer’ magazine.In1999,onanannualEasterweekendwindsurfingtripwithfriendstoSterkfonteinDam,we weregobsmacked–AnthonyTealefromCapeWindsurfCentrebroughtAnthonyBerzackandAngus‘Goose’ WelchupfromCapeTowntodemothenewsportofkitesurfing.Berzackpumpedupa9sqmNaishAR5 withatinylittlebluehandheldpump,cruisedstraightoutandjumped3storieshigh.Thatmoment changedmylife.I’dbeenwindsurfingfor15yearsandhadneverjumpedremotelythathigh.Iwashooked, IwentstraightbacktoJohannesburg,soldallmywindsurfinggear,emptiedmybankaccountaboughta 9sqm Naish AR5.Withmyfirstkitesurfingpurchase,Irealizedveryquicklythatthereweremanyareasforimprovement.I tookthatkitetoalocalsailrepairshopandaskedifIgavethemadesignforakiteiftheycouldmakesuch aproduct.Havingstartedmyownbusiness6monthsearlier,Iregretfullyneverpursuedthekite manufacturingproject.Overtheyears,justlikewindsurfingbeforeit,kitesurfingequipmentimprovedin leapsandbounds.Inmy20thyearofkitesurfing,Ihaveboughtalotofkites,butoneverypurchase,there were always details I believed could be better, and prices that could be lower.Inmid-2017,theopportunitypresenteditselfformetobeinvolvedwiththedesignanddistributionofa kite brand, just like all those years ago.Weunwrappedandpumpedupandflew thefirstLacunaGammaprototypekite.It wasaterriblekite.Weinterrogatedthe design,thematerials,theconstruction methodsandwetriedagain.Overthe next2years,weboughtandtestedover 40kitesfrom8topbrands.Somewere fantastic,somewerenot,allhadareasfor improvement.Andso,werevisedand improvedourowndesigns.Weproduced countlessprototypes,somekiteswere testedwithover60bridleconfigurations. Arigorous,time-consuming,and expensive exercise.Weperseveredanddevelopedonekiteaftertheother–testing andrefiningrelentlessly.Andmakenomistake,manybrands testinCapeTownforgoodreason.BecauseCapeTownisthe litmustestforkitesurfingequipment.CapeTownsummers serveupconditionslikenootherplaceonearth.Endless25-40 knotplusdays,searingsunshine,coldwater&bigsurf.That’s whythebestarehere,everyyear.Ourno-compromiseattitude toqualityhasresultedinarangeofbulletproofkitesand boardsthatcanstandproudwiththebest.Utilizingonlythe bestmaterials,thebestconstructionmethods,andrefined designs, Lacuna products represent quality.Toourastonishment,thepriceswereafractionofwhatwehad beenpayingbigbrandsalltheseyears.Whatstartedasa projecttomakethebestpossiblekitebecameanopportunity tomakequalitykitesaffordabletotherider.Andwefeelwe havedonejustthat.Weaimtocontinueinnovatingand improvingandtocontinuemakingqualitykitesurfing equipment affordable.
